Provenance - this gorgeous fruit is from tall rainforest trees from the higher altitude parts of north-eastern Queensland and north-east NSW.
We respect and thank our Aboriginal supply partners for imparting their incredible knowledge to us about this amazing plant.
Many of the Indigenous fruits bear unlikely names given to them by European settlers who struggled to come to terms with their environment by calling the new (to them) fruits and trees by old familiar names. The Lemon Aspen is not an aspen at all, but probably reminded someone of the American aspens. It is actually an Australian rainforest tree that's closest relative is a similar species in India. The Lemon Aspen bears clusters of delicious fruit and is one of a number of Acronychia distributed in the tropical and sub-tropical north eastern coastal rainforest regions that have edible fruit. It grows from the lower sub-tropical latituders of NSW all the way to far North Queensland's Atherton Tablelands and into the Cape country.
The Lemon Aspen is a medium-to-tall tree and has dark-green , oval shaped leaves and masses of creamy-yellow flowers.
Culinary use
This fruit has a fabulous and intriguing taste of intense and tart lemon flavour, and following this incredible citrus hit, secondary favours develop - hints of eucalypt, grapefruit and an almost a note of honey at the finish.
Never underestimate the strength of flavour of the lemon aspen. Generally 100g of fresh Lemon Aspen (about 20 of the grape sized fruit) is equal to the juice, pulp and zest of 6 large lemons! As Lemon Aspen is difficult to find , we have freeze-dried the fruit to concentrated powder. This 30 gm pack is equal to 240g of fresh Lemon Aspen with all of the flavour and nutrients captured. It has a delightfully tart citrusy lemon sherbet flavour.
Lemon Aspen Superfruit Powder is perfect sprinkled over fresh grilled prawns or add to mayonnaise.
Make an iced tea with Lemon Aspen Superfruit Powder, Kakadu Plum Superfruit Powder , with mint and raspberries. Add to a mango smoothie , or add to a gin and tonic for a lovely flavour twist.
